Estate planning is something most people know they should do, yet it’s often delayed until a life event makes it unavoidable. A funeral. A sudden illness. A story that hits too close to home. At its core, estate planning is not about documents. It is about protecting the people you care about most.
But there’s one critical truth many people don’t realize: Estate planning is not a one-time event. It is an ongoing process.
When someone passes away without an estate plan, their assets are distributed according to Delaware’s laws, not personal wishes. In Delaware, this means the court—not your family—determines who inherits, which can produce results that bear little resemblance to what you intended. For many families, that means:
Estate planning isn’t about how much you have; it’s about making sure what you have is handled the right way.
Creating an estate plan is one of the most meaningful things you can do for your family. You are:
A well-designed plan allows your loved ones to focus moving through their grief and remembering the legacy of your life, not paperwork.
Even after deciding to move forward, many clients feel:
After signing, most people feel relief, and hope they won’t need to revisit their plan. But here’s the reality: Life changes. Your estate plan needs to change with it.
Many estate plans fail not because they were poorly designed, but because they were never maintained. Over time:
Without updates, your plan can slowly become ineffective.
Even responsible individuals often delay updates because:
The result? A carefully created plan sitting in a drawer, outdated and disconnected from reality.
At DiPietro Law, we believe estate planning should not end when documents are signed. That’s why we created the Bridge Program, a proactive, ongoing approach to keeping your plan working over time. We serve families throughout Delaware, including Sussex County, Kent County, and the broader Delmarva Peninsula—communities where we understand the specific planning needs that come with the region.
Our mission is simple: Connect your intentions today with the outcomes you want tomorrow.
One of the most valuable features of the Bridge Program is the opportunity to bring your family into the conversation. During the first year of enrollment, clients may schedule a family meeting. This meeting allows the individuals named in the plan to sit down with the client and the attorney, either in person or virtually, to learn how the plan works and understand their future roles.
During a Family Meeting:
This clarity can prevent confusion, reduce conflict, and give your family confidence when it matters most.
Throughout the year, clients are encouraged to stay in contact with their dedicated legal assistant to report any changes to their assets. When assets change, we can recommend updates or assist with ownership or beneficiary adjustments, so the plan remains aligned.
Even if clients do not reach out during the year, we will contact them annually after they renew their Bridge enrollment. This allows us to proactively:
You don’t have to remember everything. We help you stay on track.
When Bridge clients need legal advice on updates to their planning due to changes in the law, or changes in their or their beneficiaries’ circumstances, they are entitled to have a meeting with their attorney up to once per year. Our team monitors changes to Delaware estate and trust law, including updates to the Delaware Code and any legislative developments that affect how plans are administered—and we communicate those changes directly to Bridge clients. This allows us to proactively:
Bridge Program members understand something many people overlook: Creating a plan is only the beginning. Maintaining it is what makes it work.
They value:
Many firms help clients create estate plans. At DiPietro Law, we aren’t focused on just creating legal documents. We are driven to create estate plans that work, now and far into the future.
We believe estate planning should be:
Ask yourself:
If you’re unsure, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
If you have completed your estate plan but are unsure whether it still reflects your wishes, you are not alone. Life changes, assets change, and even the most carefully prepared plan may need adjustments over time. Maintaining your plan ensures that the intentions you put in place today continue to work for your loved ones in the future.
At DiPietro Law, our relationship with clients does not end when the documents are signed. Through programs like the Bridge Program, we help clients review their plans, keep their assets aligned, and remain confident that their planning continues to serve its purpose.
Whether you are considering estate planning for the first time or want to ensure your existing plan remains effective, our team is here to guide you.
If you are ready to take the next step, we invite you to reach out. Families begin with a consultation after submitting a brief worksheet. During this meeting, one of our trained Client Service Directors will help identify your needs, explain available strategies, and outline what to expect, including timeline and cost.
We offer fixed-fee planning, but no two plans are the same. The consultation is a necessary first step toward determining the right path forward.
Planning begins with a conversation, and the right guidance today can provide clarity and peace of mind for years to come.
